Hair transplant is a procedure which involves harvesting of hair follicles from the back and sides of the head and implanting them in the area of hair loss. It is indicated in set of patients who have baldness and also have the hair follicles in the donor area. That means in early hair loss like Norwood 1 there is only thinning which is managed conservatively with medications like minoxidil or finasteride. In stages where there is baldness hair transplant can be done provided scalp is healthy and donor hair follicles are available. In advance stages like in Norwood 7 where there is no donor grafts available hair transplant is not an option. In other stages, where hair transplant can be done one has to see how many grafts are available and whether they will be sufficient to give optimal density and result. In certain situations one can harvest the grafts from extended donor site if the scalp donor follicles are not adequate.

One has to understand that it will not replace the lost hairs, hair transplant is a kind of shuffling of hair follicles from one area to another. The hairs which are lost are not replenished but taken from one area and transplanted in other area. But yes, one can have excellent natural looking result.
