Do helmets cause hair loss?

July 03, 2019 | By Dr. Sangay Bhutia (Hair Transplant Doctor in Delhi, NCR, India)

The use of helmet is a matter of concern in persons who are experiencing hair loss and are regularly drive bikes or they are into sports like cycling, baseball, cricket etc. or they wear some kind of cap regularly. The use of helmet may be associated with continuous pulling and rubbing of hair which can lead to stress on the follicles leading to traction alopecia. Sweating associated with the use of helmet is another concern as repeated sweating may harbor bacteria in the inner side of the helmet. It is therefore advisable to use a helmet which is not too tight or too loose. One should also lift the helmet repeatedly off the head to let some air in and to relieve stress on the hair.
